Technip-Coflexip: contract award from BASF for a chlor-alkali plant in Germany

Technip-Coflexip (NYSE: TKP and Euronext: 13170), in a consortium with Asahi Kasei Corp, has been awarded by BASF AG, a lumpsum turnkey contract, worth more than 50 million euros, for the conversion of a diaphragm chlor-alkali plant to membrane technology at Ludwigshafen, Germany.

The project will be carried out by the engineering center of Technip-Coflexip in Dusseldorf, in close collaboration with Asahi Kasei, the number one supplier of bipolar cell membrane technology in the world.

In addition to the complete exchange of the cell room equipment, which is the heart of the plant, the project will include modifications and/or new installations for all associated facilities, such as salt dissolution and brine treatment and caustic evaporation, as well as chlorine and hydrogen treatment.

The converted plant will have a capacity of 620 metric tons of chlorine per day. It will feature the highest standards in membrane technology, thus reducing energy consumption and allowing the production of higher-quality end products.

Technip-Coflexip/Asahi Kasei's scope of work covers the license, the basic design, detail engineering, procurement, supply of equipment and materials as well as construction.

Since the chlor-alkali plant is one of the key units of BASF's integrated chemical production complex (chlorine, caustic soda, hydrogen) at Ludwigshafen, a special challenge of this project is the conversion of the cell room to membrane electrolysers in the shortest shut-down time possible, thus minimizing the down-time effects on the integrated complex itself as well as on its downstream consumers.

The plant is scheduled for completion end of 2003.

With a workforce of about 18,000 and annual revenues of about 5 billion euros, TECHNIP-COFLEXIP ranks among the top five in the field of oil and petrochemical engineering, construction and services. Headquartered in Paris, the Group is listed in New York (NYSE: TKP) and in Paris (EURONEXT: 13170). Statements in this news release other than historical financial information are forward-looking statements subject to risks and uncertainties. Actual results could differ materially depending on factors such as capital expenditures in the oil and gas industry, the timing of development of offshore energy resources, materialization of construction risks, the strength of competition, interest rate movements and stability in developing countries.
