Technip awarded contract by Sasol for a polypropylene plant in South Africa
Technip has been awarded by Sasol a contract worth € 47 million for a large capacity polypropylene(1) plant to be built at Secunda, 150 km south east of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. The plant is based on BP’s Innovene gas-phase technology.
This project will be carried out by the Technip’s engineering center based in Lyon, France, which will perform engineering, procurement services, construction supervision and overall project management, with support from Technip South Africa. The delivery of the plant “ready for commissioning” is scheduled to be completed in December 2005.
Prior to this award, Technip first developed, in close cooperation with BP, the process design package of this plant and also performed the Front End Engineering Design of the project.
This contract award further strengthens Technip’s leading position in polypropylene facilities, an area in which Technip has designed and built 8% of the world’s overall capacity. It is also a new major step for Technip on the South African market and represents further development in the growing business relationship with Sasol, one of the main shareholders of the companies for which Technip is currently executing the Gas-to-Liquids project in Qatar and the 9th Petrochemical Complex at Asaluyeh in Iran.
(1) Due to its exceptional shock resistant properties, polypropylene is a plastic used in a wide range of industries including automobile parts, household goods, fibers and films.

Headquartered in Paris, the Group is listed in New York and Paris.
