New contract award in Egypt for the subsea development of the Sapphire offshore gas field
Within the framework of the EPIC contract recently awarded to Technip for the subsea development of Simian/Sienna fields (please see our press release dated July 1st 2003), Burullus Gas Company had the option to award to Technip additional subsea facilities for the nearby Sapphire gas field, offshore northern Egypt. The Company decided to exercise this option, thus leading to an additional award valued at approximately US $250 million.
The Sapphire project is effective as from the 20th of July 2003 and the work is scheduled to be completed in November 2005.
The scope of work of the Sapphire project is very similar to that of Simian/Sienna. It will consist mainly in long distance subsea tiebacks between 8 subsea production wells located in water depths ranging from 300 m to 499 m, 2 inter-connected manifolds and a 26” export pipeline to be connected into the Scarab/Saffron facilities. Technip, through its engineering and manufacturing forces in the UK, will provide the design, engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, testing and commissioning.
The Sapphire field is located 74 km from the Nile Delta shoreline, south west of the Simian field. It is expected to produce 665 million SCFD of gas to be used as feedstock for the second train of the LNG plant to be built at Idku, near Alexandria.
Burullus Gas Company is a joint venture company between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company EGAS, British Gas Egypt and Petronas.
Taken together, the Simian/Sienna development project and the Sapphire project bring to Technip an order intake in excess of US $550 million. Following the recent award of the Dalia project in Angola and East Area project in Nigeria, this contract award comes as a new major success for Technip in the highly strategic African offshore market.
