Technip has years of polymers experience and a leadership position through successful realizations of polyester, polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene projects. Our in-depth knowledge of the technologies and strong design expertise enables Technip to provide seamless project execution and optimization of the schedule/cost from the master planning and process design package stage through front-end engineering, lump sum turnkey execution and commissioning.

 

From a technology view, our long-standing alliances and relationships with INEOS, SABIC and TOTAL Petrochemicals have been recently complemented by our 2015 acquisition of the Zimmer® polymers business. From its home base in Germany, Technip Zimmer, which offers technologies for polymer processes in polyamides and polyesters, has more than 60 years of technological innovation to its credit. 

A key innovation driver stems from the Technip Zimmer Research Center where continuous R&D work on general plant concepts, process efficiencies, capacity adaptation and final product recipes, is underway.

Polymer Technologies and Alliances

A summary of our proprietary technologies and alliances in the polymer arena follows.

Technip Zimmer® Polymer Technologies

Technip’s portfolio of Zimmer® technologies for polymer processes covers two main product families.

Our polyamide offer comprises technologies used in plants which produce:

  • Polyamide 6 (PA6) chips used for packaging (PA6 film), textiles and engineering plastics
  • Polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) chips destined for textiles or engineering plastics.

For polyesters, our portfolio includes technology applications for plants which produce:

  • Polybutylene therephthalate (PBT) chips needed for engineering plastics and textiles
  • Polyethylene therephthalate (PET) chips for packaging (such as bottles), textiles and engineering plastics. These plants also can be directly connected to spinning plants for the production of textiles and may be combined with our technology for the production of staple fibers.
  • Polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) chips used for carpet and engineering plastics.
  • Biopolymers (e.g. Bio-PET, Polybutylene adipate terephthalate, Polybutylene succinate) used for packaging and engineering plastics.

Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS)

In 2011, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Technip formed an alliance for licensing SABIC’s industry leading ABS technologies which originated from the legacy GE Plastics and Borg Warner companies. SABIC Innovative Plastics has been a supplier of ABS for over 50 years and operates four world scale facilities including a new facility commissioned late 2015 in Saudi Arabia.

SABIC/Technip offer two distinct ABS processes for license, a highly versatile Emulsion Process and a lower capital cost Mass Process. Applications for ABS include electrical components, electronics, automotive, appliances, construction, pipe fittings, and consumer goods. More specialized grades of ABS can be produced that are well suited for applications requiring high heat resistance (automotive applications), flame retardant characteristics or electroplating capabilities. Key features of the technology include: inherently safe reaction processes, low reaction viscosities, high process yields and competitive capital investment.

Polyolefins

Technip is the exclusive Licensing Support Contractor for all INEOS polyolefin technologies; a close relationship which has been developed together over the last 30 years. Support to promotion and bidding, preparation of the Process Design Package (PDP) and post-PDP assistance during the EPC phase are provided by Technip for all the INEOS licensed projects.

INEOS Technology combined various licensing business heritages under the common Innovene™ brand name:

  • Innovene™ G, polyethylene in gas phase, former BP licensing
  • Innovene™ S, high density polyethylene in slurry phase, former Solvay process
  • Innovene™ PP, polypropylene in horizontal agitated gas phase, former Amoco licensing
  • Innovene™ is now the new reference and INEOS among the leading licensors in today’s polyolefin technology licensing market.

For low density polyethylene production (LDPE), Technip is the exclusive Licensing Support Contractor for the SABIC Technologies LDPE Clean Tubular Reactor™. This simple, non-pulsing technology is renowned for the production of films of superior product quality.

Polystyrene (GPPS / HIPS)

In addition to a 40-year alliance with Total in Styrene Monomer (see Badger Licensing), Technip has formed an exclusive alliance with Total to jointly market and license Total’s general purpose polystyrene (GPPS)/high impact polystyrene (HIPS) technology on a worldwide basis. Technip licenses the technology to third parties, prepares technical offerings and Process Design Packages (PDP), and supports clients during project execution and plant operation. With more than 45 years of polystyrene manufacturing, licensing and research and development experience, Total provides the market with a state of the art technology to produce superior performance polymers well suited for a wide range of applications.

Polystyrene (EPS)

Technip is the exclusive Licensing Support Contractor for INEOS expandable polystyrene worldwide. Support to promotion and bidding, preparation of the Process Design Package (PDP) and post-PDP assistance during the EPC phase, are provided by Technip for all INEOS’ licensed projects.
