B

BIODIESEL
Biodiesel is produced through the transesterification of vegetable oils (sunflower and rapeseed oils) and, blended with gas oil, is used in diesel motors.

C

CRYOMAX®
a Technip’s trademark applying to a family of patented cryogenic processes for gas fractionation to recover C2+ (Ethane+) or C3+ (Propane+) hydrocarbons from natural gas and refinery off-gases.

D

Development (of a gas or oil field)
all operations associated with the construction of facilities to enable the production of oil and gas.

E

EPIC (Engineering, Procurement, Installation, Commissioning)
an EPIC or “turnkey” contract integrates the responsibility going from the conception to the final acceptance of one or more elements of a production system. It can be awarded for all, or part, of a field development.

ETHANOL
produced through fermentation of agricultural raw materials (biomass), ethanol is used for various applications: drinks, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, solvents, chemicals and more and more often in fuels, either in the form of an additive to gasoline (ETBE: Ethyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether) or blended directly with hydrocarbon-based gasoline.

FEED
Front-End Engineering Design.

Flexible flowline
flexible pipe laid on the seabed for the transportation of production or injection fluids. It is generally an infield line, linking a subsea structure to another structure or to a production facility. Its length ranges from a few hundred meters to several kilometers.

Flexible riser
riser constructed with flexible pipe (see Riser).

Floaters
floating production units including floating platforms, and FPSO’s.

FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading)
a converted or custom-built ship-shaped floater, employed to process oil and gas and for temporary storage of the oil prior to transhipment.

FPU (Floating Production Unit)
a ship-shaped floater or a semi-submersible used to process and export oil and gas.

FSHR (Free Standing Hybrid Riser)
a deepwater riser configuration (see Riser) consisting of a vertical rigid pipe section between the seabed and a submerged buoy and a catenary flexible pipe jumper between the submerged buoy and the floater.

G

GK6 technology
this technology improves the ethylene production of the furnaces by 35% compared to the original capacity. This increase in capacity is achieved by replacing the existing coil. Moreover, this technology allows the furnace to operate on a range of feedstocks from naphta to heavy oils, with high selectivity and long on-stream time. To-date, Technip’s GK6 technology has been applied for the modernization of over 100 furnaces in the last seven years.

GTL (Gas-to-Liquids)
transformation of natural gas into liquid fuel (Fischer Tropsch technology).

H

HCR (Hybrid Catenary Riser)
riser configuration comprised of two flexible sections of flexible pipe (at the top and the bottom) and a rigid section in the middle.

Hybrid Riser
a riser (see Riser) configuration combining both flexible and rigid pipe technologies.

I

IPB (Integrated Production Bundle)
a patented flexible riser assembly combining multiple functions of production and gas lift, which incorporates both active heating and passive insulation. Used for severe flow assurance requirements.

IRM (Inspection, Repair and Maintenance)
routine inspection and servicing of offshore installations and subsea infrastructures.

J

Jumper
short pipe (flexible or rigid) sometimes used to connect a flowline to a subsea structure or two subsea structures located close to one another.

L

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)
natural gas, liquefied through the reduction of its temperature to –162°C, thus reducing its volume by 600 times, allowing its transport by LNG tanker.

J-Lay
a vertical lay system for rigid pipes.

M

MSCFD
Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day.

Moonpool
opening in a vessel or a platform deck through which drilling, subsea pipelaying, or construction is conducted. Several vessels are equipped with a moonpool allowing the use of the VLS for flexible pipe and Reel-Lay or J-Lay systems.

MSCC (Milli Second Catalytic Cracker)
a catalytic cracking unit of FCC type (FCC stands for Fluid Catalytic Cracking).

O

Offshore oil and gas installation
subsea or surface (platform) oil and gas drilling facilities.

Olefins
family of molecules including in particular ethylene and propylene, which constitutes the raw material allowing for the manufacture of many plastics.

Onshore oil and gas installation
onshore oil and gas exploration/production.

P

PiP (Pipe-in-pipe)
steel pipes assembly consisting of a standard production pipe surrounded by a so-called carrier pipe. The gap between the carrier and production pipes is filled with an insulation material. As the insulation is protected from the external pressure by the carrier pipe, a high thermal performance material can be used.

Polypropylene
due to its exceptional shock resistance properties, polypropylene is a plastic material used in a wide range of industries including automobile parts, household goods, fibers and films.

R

Reeled pipe
an installation method based on the onshore assembly of long sections of rigid steel pipeline, about 1km long, which are welded together as they are spooled onto a vessel-mounted reel for transit and subsequent cost-effective unreeling onto the seabed. Minimum welding is done at sea.

Riser
a pipe or assembly of pipes used to transfer produced fluids from the seabed to the surface facilities or to transfer injection fluids, control fluids or lift gas from the surface facilities and the seabed.

ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle)
an unmanned subsea vehicle remotely controlled from a vessel or an offshore platform. It is equipped with manipulator arms that enable it to perform simple operations.

RSCR (Reeled Steel Catenary Riser)
installation of the SCR by the reel-lay method which, compared to conventional installation solutions, allows most of the welding to be performed onshore in a controlled environment, thereby reducing offshore welding which brings many benefits, particularly for fatigue sensitive components of the pipeline.

S

SCR (Steel Catenary Riser)
a deepwater steel riser (see Riser) suspended in a single catenary from a platform (typically a floater) and connected horizontally on the seabed.

SMK®
Technip’s proprietary technology for steam-cracking of gas feedstock (ethylene production).

SPAR
deep draft surface piercing cylinder type of floater, particularly well adapted to deepwater, which accommodates drilling, top tensioned risers and dry completions.

Spool
short length pipe connecting a subsea pipeline and a riser, or a pipe and a subsea structure.

SPYRO®
Technip’s proprietary model for steam-cracking yield prediction of either gas or liquid feedstock.

Subsea Technology
all products and services required to install and operate production installations on the seabed.

SURF
Subsea Umbilicals Risers Flowlines.

T

Teta wire
wire with a specific, patented, T-shape used in flexible pipe to resist the radial effect of the internal pressure. Used for high pressure and harsh environments.

Tie-back
connection of a satellite subsea development to an existing infrastructure.

TLP (Tension Leg Platform)
a floating production unit anchored to the seabed by taut vertical cables, which considerably restrict its heave motion, making it possible to have the wellheads on the platform.

U

Umbilical
an assembly of steel tubes and/or thermoplastic hoses which can also include electrical cables or optic fibres used to control subsea structures from a platform or a vessel.

V

VLS (Vertical Lay System)
a Technip proprietary technology for installation of flexible pipes.

W

Wellservicing
intervention in subsea production wells carried out from a floating rig or a dynamically positioned vessel.

13% chromium pipe
an alloy which is more corrosion resistant than carbon steel but far cheaper than usual corrosion resistant alloys like Duplex or Super Duplex. It is used for rigid pipelines.
